Cut the bread into small pieces and soak in the milk.
Beat the egg yolks until creamy, add the semolina, sugar, butter, baking powder and salt and mix with the bread. Whip the egg whites until creamy and add to the mixture.
Grease the gratin dish, pour in half of the mixture, spread the well-drained morello cherries evenly over the mixture and the rest of the mixture on top. Cover with breadcrumbs and butter flakes and cook for 45 minutes at 200 degrees in the oven.
Serve with vanilla sauce.
Ps. Variations are still: chopped almond kernels in the amount, sugar and cinnamon under the breadcrumbs, flat the whole thing what children like.
