Warm light butter or butter. Add flour, cook briefly until it begins to foam slightly, but has not yet taken on color.

Remove the pan from the heat, add the cold soup all at once and whisk until smooth. Return skillet to stove and let sauce bubble up, stirring throughout.

Reduce heat and season sauce to taste. Continue to simmer gently for 10 min, stirring occasionally.
