Cut the rolls into thin slices. Spread on a baking tray and toast lightly at 120 °C in the oven. Melt the butter and drizzle it over the rolls. Remove the rolls and increase the oven temperature to 180 °C. Mix eggs with sugar, vanilla sugar, salt, milk and lemon peel. Butter an oblong baking dish (approx. 1.5 l capacity). Spread half of the bread slices on the bottom of the dish, pour half of the egg milk. Peel and core apples, cut into thin slices, mix with cinnamon and rum. Spread raisins on the bread slices, then top with apple leaves. Top with the remaining bread slices and pour the remaining egg milk over them. Cover the pile with butter flakes and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes until golden. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve immediately.
